I am hypermobile in my mid-lumbar spine (L4-L5). This means that I’m very flexible and really “good” at backbends. And because other areas of my back are inflexible (hypomobile), it also means that I am at a much bigger risk for injury.⠀

In September, I went too deep into a backbend and irritated a disc in my low back. Since then, I have gone through a lot of pain and rehab. I’ve seen many physical therapists, doctors, masseuses, and trainers. I’ve cried, I’ve been angry, and I’ve felt hopeless.⠀

The problem with hypermobility is that without enough stability, and especially if you are ?????????? in other places like I am, you compensate by dumping into the hypermobile area. You might be okay doing this for 10 or 15 years, but most likely, someday you will get hurt. Especially if you’re an athlete and move a lot.⠀

I’m still on the journey to stabilize my low back, and I cannot do deep backbends unless I have done an extensive warmup and real core activation. And even then, I need to be careful.⠀

The truth is that I will probably never be able to do some of the super deep poses that I aspire to. Right now, I wouldn’t feel comfortable even doing the ones in this video!⠀

If you think you are hypermobile but you are just coasting by on it, hoping that you never get injured—rethink that choice. Start seeing a physical therapist and learn how to stabilize and reduce asymmetry in your body before things get bad! You’ll thank me later ?⠀
